Yankees Land All-Star 3B Ryan McMahon in Trade with Rockies
In a major midseason move, the New York Yankees have addressed their glaring need at third base by acquiring left-handed slugger Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies. In return, the Rockies will receive two promising pitching prospects — Griffin Herring (LHP) and Josh Grosz (RHP).
McMahon, 30, was a National League All-Star last season and leads the Majors with 100 starts at third base in 2025. He currently ranks in the 91st percentile in Outs Above Average, offering both elite defense and lefty power to a Yankees lineup that has struggled at the hot corner this year.
Trade Details:
-
Yankees receive: 3B Ryan McMahon
-
Rockies receive: LHP Griffin Herring, RHP Josh Grosz
New York’s third basemen have combined for a lackluster .645 OPS, ranking 8th worst in MLB this season. McMahon’s arrival is expected to bring both stability and production to the position.
So far, the Yankees have rotated through seven different third basemen in 2025. Oswald Peraza leads the group with 48 starts but has underperformed offensively, batting just .147 with three home runs before Friday's game against the Phillies.
McMahon is expected to join the Yankees on Saturday, giving fans hope for a more consistent and productive infield for the remainder of the season.
Yankees Land Ryan McMahon: Solid Bat, Elite Glove in Bronx Boost Before Deadline
As the 2025 MLB Trade Deadline (July 31, 6 p.m. ET) approaches, the New York Yankees have made a key move — acquiring third baseman Ryan McMahon from the Colorado Rockies to fill a long-standing void at the hot corner.
While McMahon’s overall numbers this season (.217/.314/.403 with 16 home runs and 35 RBIs) have been inconsistent, he’s heating up at the right time. In his last seven games, the 30-year-old has gone 7-for-24 (.292) with three home runs and seven RBIs, signaling a strong return to form.
“He has been an All-Star third baseman and a really good defender,” said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. “He’s had his ups and downs offensively… but he’s a presence and can really defend over there at third base for a number of years. We are excited to get him.”
š Yankees’ Third Base Puzzle Finds Its Piece
The Yankees’ intent to upgrade at third became clear after moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. back to second base and designating DJ LeMahieu for assignment earlier this month. While the team was rumored to be targeting D-backs third baseman Eugenio SuĆ”rez, negotiations with Arizona reportedly stalled due to a "gap in talks" (via Jon Heyman, MLB Network), prompting a pivot to McMahon.
While SuƔrez may offer more raw power, McMahon brings:
-
Superior defense (91st percentile in Outs Above Average)
-
Left-handed pop that fits Yankee Stadium’s short right-field porch
-
Contract control through 2027 at a manageable $16M per year (2026–2027)
This acquisition may not be the flashiest, but it’s a smart, balanced move that improves both the infield defense and lineup depth — two areas the Yankees have desperately needed to address. Read More...
