Army sergeant opened fire at Fort Stewart, shooting 5 soldiers before being tackled and arrested, officials confirm.

FORT STEWART, Ga. (AP) — A sergeant shot five soldiers Wednesday at one the country’s largest Army bases before he was quickly tackled by other Fort Stewart troops, forcing a brief lockdown, officials said.

Few details were immediately available about what led to the gunfire, but officials said the shooter was Sgt. Quornelius Radford, 28, who used a personal handgun, not a military firearm.

Radford opened fire where he worked but officials wouldn’t speculate about a motive, authorities said.

The injured soldiers are stable and expected to recover, said Brig Gen. John Lubas. The soldiers who tackled Radford helped ensure his arrest, said Lubas, who commands the 3rd Infantry Division.

“These soldiers, without a doubt, prevented further casualties or wounded,” he said.

This latest act of violence on a U.S. military installation — sites that are supposed to be among the most secure in the country — again raised concerns about safety and security within the armed forces’ own walls.

Gulf of california Earthquake today now 2025

HILLSDALE, N.J. -- Another small earthquake in North Jersey Tuesday appears to have been felt by a large number of people in the New York City region, according to posts on social media.

The U.S. Geological Survey reported a magnitude 2.7 earthquake northwest of the city near Hillsdale, New Jersey.

At that size, officials say it is not likely there will be impacts.

The USGS does not consider earthquakes at 3.0 and below to be very dangerous or damaging.

It comes just days after a small earthquake could be felt across the region Saturday night.

That event had a magnitude of 3.0 and hit in the New Jersey suburb of Hasbrouck Heights.

This is breaking news. This story will be updated.

New Green Card Rules for Married Couples – What Changed?

Green card marriage couples: The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) has revised its rules for evaluating family-based immigrant visa petitions, which are often filed by married couples applying for green cards.

In a press release issued on August 1, UCIS informed, “Fraudulent, frivolous, or otherwise non-meritorious family-based immigrant visa petitions erode confidence in family-based pathways to lawful permanent resident (LPR) status and undermine family unity in the United States.”

Green card marriage couples: What are the updated rules?

  • The policy clarifies that approving a family-based petition does not automatically confer legal immigration status. If the beneficiary is found to be ineligible under US immigration law, a Notice to Appear in removal proceedings can be issued.
  • USCIS states that the update aims to clarify current procedures and enhance the agency's capacity to evaluate the validity of marriage-based and other family-related immigration petitions, especially when spouses or immediate relatives seek lawful permanent residency.

  • The update highlights the eligibility criteria, required documentation, interview procedures, USCIS's approach to cases with multiple or related petitions, and the conditions for routing petitions to other government agencies. In the USCIS Policy Manual, issued by the agency, it explains requirements associated with the screening, vetting, and adjudication of family-based immigrant visa petitions, including eligibility criteria, filing, interviews, and decisions.
  • The document explains the circumstances under which USCIS forwards approved petitions to the Department of State's National Visa Centre, particularly if a beneficiary initially applied to adjust status within the U.S. but is subsequently deemed ineligible.
  • The latest update clarifies when U.S. citizens, particularly those in the military or abroad on government assignments, can file Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative, directly with the Department of State. USCIS indicates that these filings may be allowed under specific circumstances, such as during large-scale disruptive events.

Loni Anderson, WKRP in Cincinnati star, ex-wife to Burt Reynolds, dead at 79

Loni Anderson, who played a struggling radio station’s empowered receptionist on the hit TV comedy “WKRP in Cincinnati,” died Sunday, just days before her 80th birthday.

Anderson died at a Los Angeles hospital following a “prolonged” illness, said her longtime publicist, Cheryl J. Kagan.

“We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our dear wife, mother and grandmother,” Anderson’s family said in a statement.

WKRP in Cincinnati” aired from 1978-1982 and was set in a lagging Ohio radio station trying to reinvent itself with rock music. The cast included Gary Sandy, Tim Reid, Howard Hesseman, Frank Bonner and Jan Smithers, alongside Anderson as the sexy and smart Jennifer Marlowe.

As the station’s receptionist, the blonde and high-heeled Jennifer used her sex appeal to deflect unwanted business calls for her boss, Mr. Carlson. Her efficiency often kept the station running in the face of others’ incompetence.

The role earned her two Emmy Award and three Golden Globe nominations.

Anderson starred on the big screen alongside Burt Reynolds in the 1983 comedy “Stroker Ace” and the two later married and became tabloid fixtures before divorcing in 1994.

Anderson is survived by her husband Bob Flick, daughter Deidra and son-in law Charlie Hoffman, son Quinton Anderson Reynolds, grandchildren McKenzie and Megan Hoffman, stepson Adam Flick and wife Helene, step-grandchildren Felix and Maximilian.

Follow Inter Miami vs Necaxa live online in the Leagues Cup 2025

Leagues Cup, the interleague competition between Major League Soccer and Liga MX, kicks off on Tuesday as the Columbus Crew will look to defend their title aas the tournament features a new wrinkle -- only 18 MLS teams and 18 Liga MX teams in their own groups.

The tournament will run from July 29-Aug. 31 with league play in MLS pausing for Phase One and resuming on Aug. 9. Here's everything that you need to know about the tournament:

A break in the action

The MLS season may be getting down to the business end of the competition with teams having 10-13 games remaining, but it's time for a pause to play another cup competition. Fixture congestion has already been an issue with Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba already being suspended due to skipping out on the All-Star game to get additional rest, but now the Herons will take part in their third cup competition of the season, the most of any team, along with the Seattle Sounders and Los Angeles FC. Most teams are only in two cup competitions this season as MLS looks to combat fixture congestion, but now with teams in playoff positions needing to play three games in eight days, with more to come if they make the knockout stages, it remains to be seen if Leagues Cup will be too much on their legs.

Making the League Cup more exclusive with only 18 MLS teams, making the tournament cuts down on matches in the knockout stage, Phase One will still have significant minutes for each player in matches where they can't afford to lose.

Leagues Cup format

  • Who plays who in the group stage? Phase One of the tournament will only see clubs from MLS face Liga MX sides.
  • Who advances to the knockouts? Matches will take place between clubs from both leagues, and standings will be separated with each league in their own table, with the top four advancing to the quarterfinals, which will take place on Aug. 19-20. Because of this, goal difference and winning in regulation will be important because teams can finish the group stage winning all their matches but still miss out on the knockouts due to goal difference.
  • Can there be ties? Games cannot end in ties, and if one is level at the end of regulation, a penalty shootout will decide the winner. Three points are earned for a win in regulation, one point for a regulation draw, and two points for the winner of the penalty shootout.

The tournament's new wrinkle

Leagues Cup is more exclusive now with only the top nine teams in each MLS conference qualifying to match the 18 participants from Liga MX. It will be harder than ever to advance to the knockouts, with only the top four teams from each table advancing to the quarterfinals. With this setup, even if an MLS team has a higher points total than a Liga MX team in the opposite table, if they aren't in the top four of the MLS table, they won't advance, ensuring that every match has drama from matchday one to matchday three. Expansion side San Diego FC will also make their Leagues Cup debut after just beginning MLS play this season.

Why are San Diego FC in the tournament?

Not every MLS team will participate anymore, with teams now needing to qualify via the league table, where only the top nine teams from each conference make it.  Due to the Vancouver Whitecaps competing in Concacaf Champions Cup and Canadian Championship, their spot in the competition will be taken by expansion side San Diego FC, who will look to build on their fast start to life in MLS, where they're at the top of the West.
